There's a new landmark outside Space House… and it's impossible to miss. Standing 13 metres tall against our Grade II-listed brutalist tower is No.1616 Fence, a striking hot-pink installation by acclaimed artist Rana Begum, created in collaboration with structural engineers Webb Yates. Unveiled for the London Festival of Architecture 2026, it's a piece that turns something as mundane as a fence into a thought-provoking artwork on borders, boundaries, and belonging.

Rana’s material of choice is deliberately provocative: standard industrial mesh fencing, the kind you'd normally find keeping people out of a construction site. Powder-coated in vivid pink and stretched vertically to soar above passersby, it inverts everything that material is supposed to do.
It is particularly striking on the walk towards Space House from Covent Garden as it peeks through the buildings.
If you're passing through Kingsway near Covent Garden, look up. No.1616 Fence is hard to miss, and it's the kind of piece that rewards a second glance from the plinth, from across the street, and from directly underneath, where the mesh and the sky start to blur together.
Rana told us: "The material is made to be used as fencing so it is impossible not to make connotations with the act of creating barriers... In the current political climate we are facing a lot of division and renewed focus on borders."
